Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon is seeking the support of Governor Gary Herbert in opposing the draft Snake Valley agreement. In a letter to the Governor, Mayor Corroon sought state support for Millard County Commissioners in opposition to the latest report on a scheme to pump water from the Snake Valley to thirsty Las Vegas.
“We hope you carefully consider the ideas for a counter-proposal offered by the (Millard County) Commission,” wrote Mayor Corroon. “Salt Lake County continues to have great concerns that groundwater pumping in Snake Valley will result in soil erosion in the west Desert.”
That erosion would lead to windblown dust, increase particulate air pollution and adversely impact public health in Salt Lake, added the Mayor.
“In the west water issues can be divisive,” said Mayor Corroon. “But it’s ironic that the most arid state in the nation should be bent on getting water from the second most arid state in the nation.”
